On Friday 25th September, The Panel was delighted to take part in the 3rd Annual basis.point Corporate Golf Challenge at Milltown Golf Course, Dublin 14.
The shot-gun event kicked off with over 140 golfers taking part in the race to take home the Cathal Lavelle Trophy. The golf challenge was followed by a dinner where Declan O’Sullivan of Dechert spoke about the focus of basis.point and their work to help make sustainable and tangible differences to the lives of those living in poverty and how they support charities focusing on education for young people living in disadvantaged areas.
The winning team consisting achieved a combined score of 90 points, congratulations to Ian Headon and his team.
The Panel team consisted of Brendan Simeson, Elaine Keegan (MD, Citco), Ronan Doyle (Bank of Ireland) and lead by our Managing Partner Anne Keys.
Anne Keys from The Panel was delighted to take part in the first day of the ITAS Summit at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Dublin 8. This two day event covers a range of topics currently in the news and of great relevance within the TA (Transfer Agency) industry.
The day began with a talk by Detlef Glow (Head of EMEA Research, Lipper) on global fund distribution trends. He spoke of the growth in AUM and how 2015 had been a very positive year for funds so far.
This was followed by an interesting panel discussion on “The Future of Alternative Fund Administration and TA Services” and a great interview by Ghassan Hakim (CEO, Riva Financial Systems) with Pat Lardner (CEO, Irish Funds Industry Association). Lardner was questioned on the new branding for Irish Funds and industry insights.
The interview with Pat Lardner was followed by a critical look on the Funds industry by Dominic Hobson, Founder of COO Connect. He spoke of the different layers of intermediation and the price of getting it wrong. How the industry needs to look at what it’s doing wrong and make improvements.
Just before the lunch break a panel discussing “Client Assets regime – What does this mean to investors and asset managers?” took to the stage.
After the lunch break Olivier Lens (Head of Funds & Investment Management at SWIFT) took to the stage with an international panel discussing “Fund Automation Initiatives”.
This was followed by the panel discussion where our own Managing Partner Anne Keys took part as a panellist. The topic was “Talent Pool in Ireland” and also included panellists such as Pierre-Yves Rahari (Senior VP – Head of Shareholder Services, PIMCO), Jenny Young (Director, Invest NI) and moderator Kieran Fox (Director – Business Development, IFIA). Anne spoke on how TA has moved up the value chain in terms of the fund servicing offering and how it’s seen as the hub of client services. The panellists all spoke on how companies should to open up to the benefits that versatility in employee backgrounds can have to their operations. They also discussed what’s happening on the ground in Ireland in terms of Transfer Agency and how attracting and retaining top talent is key to further growth and success of your TA and funds business.
The afternoon saw a further panel discussing “Client Segmentation in the spotlight: How to bring the TA service offering to the next level” and a talk by Anand Ramachandran (Senior Director, Global Banking Solutions Practice at Oracle). He spoke on the topic of “Best practices for successful TA operations”.
The day was concluded by a hugely insightful talk by Jamie Woodruff, an ethical hacker on the topic of Cyber Security best practices”.

On Thursday 24th September The Panel hosted an event in Café en Seine in Dublin city specifically for Newly Qualified Accountants who are exploring their options out of practice.
Featuring three prominent industry speakers the event was well attended by finance professionals thinking about their career prospects after qualifying.
Our first speaker was Majella Mungovan, Finance Director at Facebook (Ireland). She spoke of her transition from newly qualified to working in various senior roles, largely with Microsoft, before joining Facebook in her current position.
The second speaker was Ursula Beecher, Finance Business Partner at LEO Pharma Ireland. She spoke about her background and her extensive experience in commercial finance roles both within financial services and industry.
Finally, our third speaker Edel Brennan, Financial Controller at Intrepid Aviation Ireland spoke about the aircraft leasing sector and how the sector has changed and evolved since she joined her current employer. She spoke about her own personal experience in transitioning from practice at manager level to the aircraft leasing sector.
All speakers are very accomplished but have different backgrounds so it was interesting to hear their respective career paths. They all gave valuable tips and advice to those pursuing a career in industry or financial services.
The night was finished off with an interactive Q&A session with plenty of questions for all of the speakers and giving the audience the opportunity to find out more about the areas of most relevance to them.
The Panel held a prize draw during the event and the winner was Emer Gavin who received a €200 One4All voucher from our ACA Recruitment Manager Louise O’Leary. Congratulations Emer and many thanks to all who attended the event and to our speakers for some great insights into the current market.
