7 Summits – Aconcagua 2, Almost there!

“There’s a mountain top, that I’m dreaming of, if you need me, you know where I’ll be.”

[George Ezra, “Shotgun”]

Since my return from Argentina last February I have been thinking of nothing else but to return and climb Aconcagua again. However, I knew changes were required and as 2018 progressed my return plans were set. I reserved a place on the Aconcagua 7 Summits – January 19th, 2019 expedition, booked return flights out of Dublin to Mendoza and set a new training plan into action with the help of a friend. A plan which would be more concentrated on core strength and building stamina.

The events completed in 2018 included three adventure races 57km, 63km and 73km, 4 triathlons, 2 half marathons, 4 spotifs, and some charity sponsor fun (very competitive) runs. I also trekked The Mournes more frequently than before and summited Carrauntoohill, always with only one goal in mind, returning and summiting Aconcagua.

Below is a collage of my home gym sessions, 50-minute sessions, which include a number of disciplines.

The backpack and the tree trunk, retrieved from a recent fallen tree, are 15kgs each.

I am now in the best shape of my life both physically and mentally.

The last week before departure is the most anxious for me, having to be careful to avoid any risk of injury and illness. My climb gear list has been printed, read and re-read, checked and re-checked. The packing of what is needed rather than what I’d like to bring versus airline weight allowance varies considerably!

The climbing itinerary is scheduling a summit push for the 30th, all going to plan. We will have a number of acclimatisation rotations from Base Camp (BC) at 4,320 meters to 5,000 and 5,500 before an overnight at 6,000 on summit push.

I am very hopeful and determined to sing these, revised, lyrics ….

There’s a mountain top, that I’ve just been upon, if you need me, you know where I’ll be.”

I’ll try to keep you all posted on progress. Follow me on Instagram or Facebook.
