Jim Power is a graduate of University College, Dublin with a BA in Economics & Politics, and a Master of Economic Science Degree.  During a career within the financial services industry, he has worked as Treasury Economist at AIB Group and Chief Economist at Bank of Ireland Group Treasury and Friends First Group. In October 2000 he testified before a UK House of Lords Committee on Economic & Monetary Affairs on Ireland’s experience in EMU. He argued with prescience that the Irish political elite would not be capable of managing a small open economy in a monetary union and suggested that Britain would be ill-advised to join the Single Currency. He has taught Financial Management to under-graduates in Dublin City University; Economics on the Local Government MBA at Dublin City University and Business Economics on the Executive MBA and the Full Time MBA at the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, University College Dublin. In September 2014, he will teach Business Economics on the Full Time MSc Management at the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, University College Dublin. 

He writes regular columns in both The Examiner and The Sunday Business Post online edition and contributes to numerous other newspapers and magazines on an occasional basis. He is also a frequent contributor to radio and TV on a variety of different shows. He is a board member of Agri-Aware, the food awareness body and is Chairperson of Love Irish Food. He is editor of Friends First regular ‘Economic Outlook’, which has become established as one of Ireland’s leading commentaries on the Irish economy. His first book ‘Picking up the Pieces’ was published by Blackhall Publishing in November 2009.

The Panel to run in the Grant Thornton Corporate 5K Team Challenge

On Wednesday 5th September, our team of recruiters and support staff is once again swapping office wear for running gear as they join the thousands of other corporate teams to run the Grant Thornton Corporate 5K Team Challenge at the Docklands, Dublin.


Organised by the Irish Association of Corporate Treasurers (IACT) in association with Grant Thornton, and Athletics Ireland, this flat course race is aimed at encouraging social running amongst the Dublin business community.


We would like to wish everyone good luck, especially #TeamThePanel with Alan, Noel, Derek, Sarahlynn, Tanya, Susan, Louise Thornton, Louise O’Leary, Rebecca, Ailbhe, Deirdre, and Aidan!


The Panel to take part in the IACT Golf Day 2016

On Friday 24th June, The Panel will take part in the IACT Annual Golf Day at the Dun Laoghaire Golf Club.

Our team, captained by Alan Bluett, will join a number of other teams in this shotgun start event.

100 Women in Hedge Funds

Since 2001, 100 Women in Hedge Funds has grown into a worldwide network of more than 13,000 professional industry members.  Focussing on making a difference in the industry and the community the volunteer members have set up a number of unique programmes around the world, based on the Three Pillars of thought; educational programming, professional leverage initiatives, and philanthropy.

The Panel along with other senior female professionals from the Funds industry in Ireland are now facilitating the setup of the Irish chapter of 100 Women in Hedge Funds.

We are holding a pre-launch meeting on the 7th April.  Joanna Thompson de Colonges, founder of the Paris Chapter 100WHF, will provide guidance to us on how to set up the 100Women in Hedge Fund Chapter in Ireland.

Jim Power is Chief Economist for Aviva Ireland. He was previously Treasury Economist at AIB  (1987-1991), Chief Economist at Bank of Ireland Group  (1992-2000) and Chief Economist Friends First Group (2000 to 2018).

He is owner manager of Jim Power Economics Limited, an economic and financial consultancy. The company carries out consultancy projects, public speaking, and training for a variety of public and private sector entities. He is Chairman of Love Irish Food. He is a member of the Institute of Directors in Ireland.

He is a graduate of UCD and holds a BA and a Master of Economic Science Degree. He lectures part-time on the MSc Management and the MBA at Smurfit School of Business, UCD.

Richard Pike has extensive experience of working with financial institutions throughout the world, assisting companies in managing enterprise risk more efficiently while addressing local regulatory guidelines and standards. Richard is currently Chairman of Citadel Securities (Ireland) Ltd and an Independent Non-Executive Director at, FBD Insurance plc, The National Cyber Security Society, JPMorgan fund administration, JPMorgan hedge fund administration and Citadel Securities Europe. He is also the founder and CEO of Governor Software.

Prior to these roles, Richard has worked in various senior banking, insurance, credit and market risk roles at Permanenttsb bank, Wolters Kluwer Financial Services, ABN AMRO, Bain, COMIT Gruppe and Quay Financial Software.  He has analysed, designed and managed the development of core treasury and enterprise risk management systems for large financial institutions, including UBS, Citibank, Schroders and Unicredito.

In 2009, Richard was recognised as a “Top 50” Face of Operational Risk by Op Risk & Compliance magazine and was a contributing author to two books on risk management.  He was also a founding board member of the Governance, Risk and Compliance Technology Centre which focuses on research in the area of financial services governance, risk and compliance. He teaches on risk management at the Institute of Banking and at the UCD Smurfit Business School. Richard has also received the designation of ‘Certified Bank Director’ from the Institute of Banking.

Entering its 22nd year, the Calcutta Run is hoping to smash all previous records, with regards to both participants and funds raised in 2020.

In 2019, over 1,500 participants took part and attended the event. Overall the event successfully raised a record €300,000 for the chosen charities: The Peter McVerry Trust and The Hope Foundation, aimed at supporting the work they carry out to battle the fight against homelessness and education of youths in Dublin and Calcutta. 

This year the Calcutta Run is urging people to also take part in their soccer competition, and to sign up their firms/companies to set up their own individual fundraising events ahead of the main event.

The Dublin event is taking place on Saturday 23rd May and the Cork event takes place on Sunday 24th May – registration is now open!
